    I presume that you are asking about the tax forms related to Individual whose filing status may be different . IRS has prescribed different Federal individual income tax returns for different filing status. So,you must use the tax form that suits your particular filing status  and allows you to claim the income, tax deductions, tax credits, etc. that apply to you.

    The most common types of income tax forms to use are :

    • Form 1040 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) (a.k.a. “the long form”)
    • Form 1040A (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) (“the is quick tax return form”)
    • Form 1040EZ (Income Tax Return for Single and Joint Filers With No Dependents)
    • Form 1040NR (U.S. Nonresident Alien Income Tax Return)
    • Form 1040NR-EZ (U.S. Income Tax Return for Certain Non resident Aliens With No Dependents)


    1. Form 1040EZ

    IRS Tax Form 1040EZ is the eaziest federal individual income tax form ( so ending with EZ).It is short and having very less number of information fields .The 1040EZ is less complex than Tax Form 1040 and Tax Form 1040A, so it generally takes less time to fill out and process.

    Who can file Form 1040EZ

    Form 1040Ez  is designed for indiviuals whose filing status is “single” or “married filing jointly” with no dependents.

    2. Form 1040A

    IRS Tax Form 1040A is a simplified  is a two-page tax form that is less complex than IRS Tax Form 1040. So it is bigger than Form 1040EZ  and therefore covers more than Form 1040EZ . Unlike Form 1040EZ, it allows taxpayers to report common types of income, tax credits, and tax deductions.you cannot itemize your deductions and the types of tax credits you can claim are limited.     Who can use Form 1040A?

    The 1040A Form is available to taxpayers of any age and any filing status.

    3. Form 1040

    This is  standard Federal income tax form for an an individual taxpayer . Compare to to short form Form 1040EZ or Form 1040A , it is quite voluminous and lengthy  . The IRS Form 1040 allows taxpayers to claim numerous expenses and tax credits, itemize deductions, and adjust income. Maybe that is the reason it looks voluminious but  it benefits taxpayers by giving them more opportunities to lower their tax bills.

    Who can fuse Fomr 1040?

    Every Individual can use this form , but you should first check to see if you qualify to use the simpler 1040A or 1040EZ tax forms. The basic rule  is : When in doubt, file Tax Form 1040.

    4. Form 1040NR

    IRS Tax Form 1040NR is  for non-resident aliens. This tax form is similar to the regular 1040 form used by U.S. citizens.

    Who should use Form 1040NR

    • You were a nonresident alien during tax year
    • had business income or
    • who did not engage in U.S. business, but received income from U.S. sources that are reportable on Schedule NEC.

    5. Form 1040NR-EZ

    IRS Tax Form 1040NR-EZ is  the simpler version of the 1040NR which is for the same group of people. You cannot claim any dependents and you cannot be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s income tax return
