You must start taking RMDs for the year in which you turn 73 (for those born after 1960). However, you can delay your first RMD until April 1st of the following year. If you choose to delay, you’ll have to take two RMDs that year – one for the previous year and one for the current year. After that, you’ll need to take RMDs by December 31st of each subsequent year. Refer to the IRS 2025 RMD tables for the specific factors and divisors used to calculate your RMD amount.
