IP Pin from IRS: What, When, How & Why?

2021 Tax filing season is starting 12th February, but the online allotment of IP PIN (Identity Protection Pin) through IRS website started from 15th January 2021.IRS sends  CP01A notices from mid-December through early January all taxpayers eligible to receive an IP PIN. This shows how much importance IRS attaches to this process that helps taxpayers to protect his/her identity. So what is IP Pin? The IRS IP PIN is a 6-digit number allotted to taxpayers to help prevent the misuse of their social security number (SSN) to file a fraudulent federal income tax return.

What is the use of IP Pin?

Once you are allotted IP Pin for 2021 (pl note that a new IP PIN is generated each year.), your efiled tax return will be rejected by IRS. In case of manual tax return, it won’t be accepted by the IRS unless you quote your IP PIN on the on Forms 1040, 1040-PR and 1040-SS. This includes current year returns as well as any delinquent tax returns. If you fail to enter your IP PIN correctly, IRS will try to verify identity before processing your tax return. This will delay any refund you may be due.

Who can get an IRS IP PIN?

Anyone who can verify his/her identity is eligible to enrol into the IP PIN program, Basically, the verification requires your SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). If you do not have these, you will not able to get an IP PIn. You will receive IP PIN also in following cases

How to get an IP Pin from IRS?

You can get an instant IP Pin by visiting the IRS exclusive web page on IRS.gov/IPPIN and then using the online tool Get an IP PIN. If you do not already have an IRS account, you will need either SSN or ITIN. Please consult, IRS.gov/SecureAccess for more information y. Once taxpayers authenticate themselves, they will see the 2021 IP PIN immediately. There is no need to file a Form 14039, an Identity Theft Affidavit, to opt into the program.

How to get an IP PIN if you can’t verify your identity online?

If cannot verify their identities online, then complete Form 15227, Application for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number, and mail or fax to the IRS. This form is for people having annual AGI of $72,000 or less. An IRS customer service representative will contact the taxpayer and verify their identities by phone.

What to do if one loses or forgets IP PIN ?

A4: If we issued you an IP PIN and you lost it or you didn’t receive a new one in the mail, you’ll need to obtain your IP PIN before you can e-file your return. You can get your current IP PIN by using the Get an IP PIN application. If you lost the IP PIN or didn’t receive one in the mail, visit Retrieve Your IP PIN.

You may also call IRS at 800-908-4490 for specialized assistance, Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. your local time (Alaska & Hawaii follow Pacific Time), to have your IP PIN reissued to you within 21 days after phone verification of your identity .
