Below is a list of common adjustments in computing AMT:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>If you claimed the <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irstaxapp.com\/standard-deduction-when-to-claim-more-when-you-cant-claim-a-penny\/\">standard deduction<\/a><\/em><\/strong> on your regular tax return, you must add it back to your taxable income when calculating your AMTI.<\/li><li>You must add back the State and local taxes deducted on Schedule A of Form 1040  to your taxable income when calculating your AMTI.<\/li><li>If you add back the interest paid on a home mortgage for any loan not used to buy, build, or substantially improve your primary or secondary residence, similarly, interest paid on home equity loans or lines of credit used for purposes <strong>other than<\/strong> buy, build, or substantially improve your primary or secondary residence should be added back.<\/li><li>Medical expenses less than 10% of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irstaxapp.com\/question\/5822-what-is-agi-or-adjusted-gross-income\/\">adjusted gross income<\/a> (AGI) should be added. <\/li><li>Miscellaneous itemized deductions subject to the 2% AGI floor (such as unreimbursed employee expenses, tax preparation fees, and investment expenses) are not deductible for AMT purposes.<\/li><li>Depreciation can also be added for certain assets. Calculating depreciation for AMT purposes may differ from the method used for regular tax purposes.
